Hobart :: Things Women Do Out Of Politeness

Leave it to Beaver fantasy household we were not, that’s what our mothers would have done. Accept the ride offered to us when we were teenagers hitchhiking in the early 1970s, even though we had a funny feeling about the oily-haired driver with a trash-bag stuffed with, he bragged, more pot than you ladies could dream of. Take the kiss when we were in our early twenties from the pale, pock-faced soldier sitting next to us on a plane, on his way to be deployed to Grenada, after he had asked if he could, and we said no even as our mental viewfinder flashed: Marlene Dietrich kissing the shirtless soldier through the window of a train, a soldier kissing Miss World on a Bob Hope tour, and the V-J Day Times Square photograph of the returning sailor kissing the nurse. Unaware that the woman would reveal later: the sailor, a stranger, had grabbed her, and

'Of An Era': The Horn of the Moon Café, And All It Stood For

The Montpelier Bridge Fred Wilber had been waiting weeks for this day, and he wasn’t going to blow it now. So he arrived early at his store, on Langdon Street in Montpelier, well before it was time to open.  But it wasn’t his own opening Fred was thinking about on this spring morning in 1979. It was the restaurant near the end of the block, just before the small bridge that arches across the North Branch of the Winooski River, where ducks quack and ice floes flow, depending on the season. The Horn of the Moon Café was opening at its new location, and Fred was determined to be its first customer.

Pastured Eggs, Composting and Human Rights Are Linked at Black Dirt Farm

Tom Gilbert Eggs from Black Dirt Farm often come with unexpected side dishes: printed notes nestled between the ungraded brown eggs and the cardboard carton. In the fall, those messages showcased the Merriam-Webster definitions of democracy and white supremacy to show that the two are mutually exclusive. This winter, pink inserts cite the figure that one in three Vermont women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, along with contact information for shelters. If the fridge and breakfast table seem like unconventional places for sparking discussions of human rights, Black Dirt Farm owner Tom Gilbert is not worried. We are intentionally provoking a conversation, and we re open to feedback, he said during a recent tour of his Stannard farm.
