RICE by Michele Lee at Orange Tree Theatre

This seemed more about the working classes being taken for a ride by the rich and powerful, which at least has some universality about it.

The Dumb Waiter at the Old Vic – online review

© Manuel Harlan f Harold Pinter hadn t gone on to write bigger, better plays, I wonder what we would all think of The Dumb Waiter. This number, about two hitmen, sitting in a basement, waiting nervously for their next job, was written in 1957, but not performed in London until 1960, two years after the infinitely more complex yet equally chilling The Birthday Party had announced Pinter s comedy of menace and his arrival on the playwriting scene. It feels like a warm-up act for everything that followed, yet its claustrophobic setting, its sense of malign and unseen forces weighing heavily on people trapped in a confined space, makes it seem constantly relevant, and never more so than now.

Service these days just isn’t what it used to be. That’s the plight of the two hit men in Harold Pinter’s absurdist comedy-drama “The Dumb Waiter,” a trim and tidy production that is being streamed live by the Old Vic Theater in London.

The Dumb Waiter, Old Vic: in Camera theatre review - Pinter's two-hander more in sorrow than in anger

Pinter wrote The Dumb Waiter in 1957 (although it wasn t seen in London until 1960) the year before The Birthday Party received its notorious première at the Lyric Hammersmith. When a friend described them both as political plays, about power and victimisation, the playwright readily agreed. And it is this aspect of the 50-minute, one-act piece that director Jeremy Herrin foregrounds. Ben and Gus are two hit men waiting in a Birmingham basement for their latest victim to arrive. The room is furnished merely with two single beds between which is the dumb waiter of the title (although there is an obvious pun here in that both men are obliged to wait and both are, to a greater or lesser extent, lacking information and agency). Their surroundings are basic, in Hyemi Shin s stark, grey design especially so. When the dumb waiter judders into action it delivers requests for meals impossible for the pair to deliver; there is a kitchen off to the side, but no means of lighting the gas l

A love story with starry quality: PATRICK MARMION reviews Constellations

Rating: Verdict: Super cosmic rom-com Constellations is a multi-dimensional love story by Nick Payne, written for two actors and set in an infinite number of universes.  The beauty of it is that you can cast almost anyone, of any age; and there may be no upper limit to the number of stars you could fix in its firmament. Kicking off this Donmar Warehouse production, being staged at the Vaudeville, we have Zoe Wanamaker and former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi; and Sheila Atim and Ivanno Jeremiah. Coupling: Peter Capaldi and Zoe Wanamaker. The beauty of it is that you can cast almost anyone, of any age; and there may be no upper limit to the number of stars you could fix in its firmament
