Jury trials delayed for another three weeks st to February 15 th, at which time the High Court hopes to have Covid protocols in place to include the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) like face shields and masks. High Court Judge Iain Morley said that there are 147 cases that are ready for trial but have been held up because Covid-19 measures to accommodate the use of jurors have not been put in place. Sentencing Guidelines Social Share I have seen a lot of contestation in the press and on social media over the last week or so regarding the applicability of sentencing guidelines to certain categories of offenses. I wanted to bring some clarity on the applicability of these relatively guidelines in my capacity as a UWI Lecturer in Law, who happened to serve on the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Sentencing Advisory Committee, which drafted said guidelines. First, it is to be noted that sentencing guidelines are documents which set out a methodology for judges and magistrates to decide upon a particular sentence, having regard to the relevant legislation, and the aggravating and mitigating circumstances relevant to the particular case.

Judge sets unusual bail conditions for mentally unstable man The 26-year-old man was kept in state custody — for his family’s protection — up until September 22 nd,when High Court Judge Iain Morley said he had been “inadvertently released from prison”. The man had been imprisoned after his grandmother testified earlier this year that he wasn’t well and needed psychiatric evaluation because he had displayed volatile behaviour and was showing signs of suffering from mental health issues. Last Friday, the man’s mother tried to hold back tears as she told the court that the young man often gets frustrated because he struggles to learn how to read.
