Virginia DOE contradicts itself in attempt to walk back equity-focused math framework

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is attempting to walk back its equity-focuses math program in a way that conflicts with previous statements it has made and materials it has promoted on acceleration.

VA school s cure for remedial math students is to make everyone remedial

Virginia’s Department of Education announced that it will eliminate accelerated math classes in all public schools. It’s about Marxist “equity.” Some kids can’t make the grade so they will bring everyone else down to their level. I think they should get rid of the NFL because some kids can’t make the NFL. While I’m at it, they should end medical school because some kids can’t get in. Once they eliminate the classes in Virginia schools, the wealthy parents will pay for extra classes or maybe they’ll move. Only the people without the ability to move will be stuck with this inferior Marxist equity education.

Equity is mediocrity

Equity is mediocrity Virginia Department of Education this week announced the “Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative” (VMPI), a plan to reorient Virginia’s mathematics curriculum that will rid their public schools of all advanced math classes for students prior to the 11th grade. No longer will those students who excel be given the opportunity to challenge themselves until they are almost in college. As the VMPI’s “Essential Concepts” Committee member Ian Shenk admits in their webinar, the new program means removing algebra, geometry, and algebra II from the curriculum for anyone before their junior year in high school. Advanced math students typically take algebra by 8th grade, and in the webinar the committee even noted students that were taking geometry in 8th grade.

All 6th graders will take Foundational Concepts 6. All 7th graders will take Foundational Concepts 7. All 10th graders will take Essential Concepts 10. Only in 11th and 12th grade i
