After what we hope is a successful journey, the Thornbury Vintage Tractor and Implement Club will be excited to return in the 1983 20 D Massey Ferguson (otherwise known as Bert) to a warm reception at the Ascot Park Hotel. Families, media and well-wishers are invited to show their support and welcome the trekkers home. The drivers have ventured 1200 km from E Hayes & Sons to the Christchurch Charity Hospital. This has been a very intentional journey as it places emphasis on the Southern DHB border. Tractor hits highway for charity hospital fundraiser

Melissa Vining and her late husband Blair Vining, from Winton, shone a light on the need for better cancer care when Blair was struck down with the illness. Melissa, who is a trustee of the charity hospital board, said fundraising initiatives that people continued to come up with was making the hospital project possible. Blair had learned to drive a tractor on a Massey Ferguson, she told the crowd of people before the tractor trek began. “He will be looking down today, smiling, probably wanting to participate.” One of the drivers, Tom Parkes, said he had always wanted to do something for the charity hospital as the service was needed in Invercargill.

There s many jobs an old tractor can do.including raising money 2 May 2021 Members of the Thornbury Vintage Tractor and Implement Club are setting off an a twelve hundred kilometre tractor trek today from Invercargill to Christchurch and back. The journey - which is expected to take up to 44 hours - is raising funds for the Southland Charity Hospital. Club president Fraser Pearce says eight drivers will take it in turns to drive the yellow 1983 Massey Ferguson tractor. He says they could have driven to Christchurch from Invercargill in 20 hours - but they figured they needed to allow time to talk to people along the way.
