Date Time OPCW Member States from Africa deepen knowledge of legislative and regulatory aspects of chemical security Representatives of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) Member States from Africa examined and discussed legislative and regulatory issues of chemical security during an online course held from 19 to 22 April. Experts from the OPCW Technical Secretariat presented the Organisation’s activities to assist Member States in strengthening their legal regimes on chemical security. The course demonstrated how implementing legislation on the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) reinforces chemical security, notably through the prohibition and penalisation of illicit activities involving chemical weapons, and the establishment of a control regime for scheduled chemicals and related facilities.

OPCW programme enhances Member State understanding and implementation of CWC at national level

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – 23 April 2021 – Representatives of National Authorities and other stakeholders from 41 Member States of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) strengthened their capacity to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) during an online training held from 19 to 22 April. The Head of OPCW’s Implementation Support Branch, Ms Beatrix Lahoupe, highlighted in her opening remarks: “It is important to raise awareness and increase understanding of the Convention among all national stakeholders as this will help to advance implementation at country level. Robust partnerships among all national actors are a key component of the successful and sustainable implementation of the CWC.”

Date Time Share OPCW Member States Develop Knowledge of CWC Requirements to Declare Relevant Chemicals and Facilities for Verification National practitioners from 31 Member States of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) yesterday completed a six-week online training course that will improve their ability to implement declaration and inspection obligations under Article VI of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Senior Coordination and Planning Officer from OPCW’s Implementation Support Branch, Ms Chizu Matsushita, emphasised: “The design of this programme, starting from self-assessment, followed by e-learning and interactive training, and ending with post-training action plans, encourages deeper ownership of Article VI implementation among national stakeholders. We are confident that the course will help practitioners to more effectively fulfil their own country’s obligations under the Convention.”
