The new year brought bad news for press freedom on the African continent with the brutal murder of one journalist and the suspicious death of another.

In several "democratic" states and the Israeli occupation, the press is subject to violence and 2022 records the highest number of deaths.

The bill seeks to provide all journalists access to medical and health benefits as well as hazard pay and additional insurance coverage, especially for those on the field. 

'The saying 'journalism is not a crime' does not work here. It's the opposite. We [journalists] are afraid of everything. We have to worry about everything," says Ma Khine, who has been in working in news for eight years now.

“Silencing valid voices through harassment and intimidation or through arbitrary website blocking weakens discourse and democracy and puts free speech at risk.”

International Press Institute (IPI) research reflects that 66 journalists and media workers were killed in 2022. In many cases, investigations into journalists’ killings stall because of a lack of political will, as the truth might implicate those in power or bring corrupt systems to a fall.

“They target me because they know that will send a chilling message,” says journalist Abdalle Ahmed Mumin, threatened for doing his job.
