editorial editor james freeman join us with more. dan, let s step back here what with this bill do? paul, i think it does essentially three things. it repeals the individual and employer mandates. it is going to repeal the 2.3 percent medical device tax. most importantly it replaces the money spent on tax credits and medicaid expansion with grants back to the states which would allow the governors on the state legislators to design healthcare programs appropriate to the populations of the estate. the states will have to apply for waivers. to the federal government to get for permission to move the plans of they have. and the bill tries to deregulate as much as possible but not completely! there is still protections in this they dispute the pre-existing conditions for example. it would have to have plans where people would have access to that kind of coverage. and a state like vermont or california could go
all. but cam, there is also an addition to the 1.5 trillion, you have other potential space created to refuse tax rates. if the republicans follow through on putting some of these loopholes and tax favors in the tax code, let s say for example the state and local tax deduction. that could be worth 1.25 trillion if they follow through and get rid of that. now for those of us that live in new york, not so much fun. but the truth is, good for the country and better for the tax code and the economy if they can do that. then you can take rates even lower! well, the key word there is if. i think what we ve seen in the house so far has been a real consciousness about this. not just about touching some of these deductions but also worried about the process that which way they score the bill and is it deficit neutral? we do not want to upset any of the fiscal hawks. and it is really cramped their
