UAlbany s Indian Quad is getting a new name, Indigenous Quad.
College President Havidán Rodriguez says the change comes after review from a group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
He also says Indian Drive will be renamed Indigenous Drive. Indigenous students have been part of UAlbany almost since its founding, and it is our responsibility to reflect on how we can more meaningfully include Indigenous communities in the education, research, service and cultural life of our University, said Rodriguez. This will require more than just changing signs on buildings and roadways, and I want to assure you that the University is committed to this work.
The University at Albany is changing the name of its Indian Quad to “Indigenous Quad” and Indian Drive to “Indigenous Drive.”
The University Council voted to change the name Friday, and says in the coming months it will change the names of other locations around campus that use the term “Indian.”
The Council says it is also drafting a land acknowledgment that recognizes the Indigenous people who lived on the land upon which the SUNY campus was built, and will erect educational signs.
