The Supreme Court has termed the Centre’s COVID-19 vaccination policy as ‘prima facie arbitrary and illogical’. The policy allowed free doses of vaccine to the concerned groups in the first two phases, and now states and private hospitals have been left to acquire vaccines for people in the age group of 18-44 years.

The top court made several important observations in the suo motu case on managing COVID-19, asking the Centre why the Rs 35,000 crore allocated in the budget to buy vaccines cannot be used to provide jabs for free.
The apex court also posed several questions to the Centre on the need for mandatory registration on CoWIN app, and the differential treatment of people based on age groups for vaccination.
