Kihcihkaw askî-Sacred Land — Canada’s first-of-its-kind urban Indigenous ceremony grounds opened in Edmonton.

Edmonton – or amiskwacîwâskahikan as its known in Cree – is now home to urban Indigenous ceremonial grounds, which officials say is the first of its kind in the country.

Kihcihkaw askî means ‘this place here is sacred’ in Cree.

Kihcihkaw askî-Sacred Land, will provide a river valley setting to host ceremonies, sweatlodges and other events.

As we face the need to limit our environmental impacts, drawing attention to pre-industrial cultures and their ecological contexts may offer some useful pointers towards a viable future.

In support of this vision, they formed the Traditional Owner-led project, Getting Back on Country. The project is led by the Olkola Aboriginal Corporation and the Olkola Rangers in collaboration with researchers at the University of Melbourne, including authors Hannah Robertson and Rochus Urban Hinkel.
