ALPE DI MERA - Britain's Simon Yates launched a solo attack to win the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia on the Alpe di Mera summit on Friday, as Egan Bernal extended his overall lead.
Colombian Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France champion, finished third on the day to keep hold of the leaders' pink jersey with only two stages remaining.
Ineos' Bernal appeared vulnerable for the first time since the race got underway in Turin, losing time in the final climb but he still holds the lead with the race finishing in Milan on Sunday.

Ireland's Dan Martin made a solo break to win the mountainous 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday, with Colombia's Egan Bernal holding onto the leader's pink jersey.
Martin, 34, resisted his rivals superbly on the final climb, over 11.2km with an average gradient at 9.8 percent, after the 193km ride between Canazei and a summit finish at Sega di Ala in the north of Italy.

Colombian Egan Bernal tightened his grip on the Giro d'Italia pink jersey with a win in the rain-hit 16th stage on Monday in the Dolomites before the final rest day.
Ineos' Bernal crossed the line alone in the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo to finish 27 seconds ahead of Frenchman Romain Bardet and Italian Damiano Caruso.
The 2019 Tour de France winner now leads Caruso by 2min 24sec with Britain's Hugh Carthy third at 3min 40sec, before Tuesday's rest day. The race ends in Milan on Sunday.
Campenaerts goes 'all-in' for Giro 15th stage as Bernal holds race lead

Qhubeka Assos' Belgian rider Victor Campenaerts said his team went "all-in" as he won Sunday's 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia with Colombian Egan Bernal holding the leader's pink jersey.
Campenaerts, 29, finished ahead of Dutch breakaway companion Oscar Riesebeek of Alpecin-Fenix on the 147km stage which crossed into neighbouring Slovenia.
Germany's Nikias Arndt, riding for Team DSM, finished third seven seconds behind the leading pair on a road made slippery by heavy rain late in the day.
