More Australian Retailers Quietly Remove Apple AirTags, Including JB Hi-Fi

Earlier this week Officeworks removed Apple’s AirTags from sale due to safety concerns surrounding the button battery. They’re now disappearing from other Australian retailers as well.

While Officeworks wouldn’t confirm the exact reason for the removal, a Reddit post earlier in the week suggested it was due to button battery.
The company says its product is designed to meet international child safety standards, including those in Australia .Â
Apple says that by requiring a two-step push-and-turn mechanism to access the battery they are following the regulations.Â
Apple has told 9News it is following regulations closely and is working to ensure that our products will meet or exceed new standards, including those for package labelling, well ahead of the timeline required .

In what appears to be an overabundance of caution, Australian office supplies and technology retailer Officeworks has temporarily pulled Apple s AirTags from sale.
When I first heard about AirTags and read that they had a user-replaceable CR 2032 battery inside, I wondered how child-safe the battery compartment and removal process would be.
An Apple spokesperson said: AirTag is designed to meet international child safety standards, including those in Australia, by requiring a two step push-and-turn mechanism to access the user-replaceable battery. We are following the regulations closely and are working to ensure that our products will meet or exceed new standards, including those for package labelling, well ahead of the timeline required.”

A new safety concern with Apple’s new AirTag tracker has prompted Australian retailer Officeworks to remove the new item from its store’s shelves. The source of the information was a Reddit thread of a user’s experience when trying to purchase one. The user tried to buy AirTags but the store was unable to locate them.
