A Limpopo initiation school has been shut down and its caregivers suspended after the death of a six-year-old boy on Monday night.

Contralesa said it’s not clear at this point what caused the deaths of these initiates but it’s called on government to work with traditional leaders to clamp down on bogus initiation schools.

The rite of passage that is coupled with circumcision of young men has been part of most African cultures since the beginning of time. It is in the main a time-honoured tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next.

The bodies of three initiates were found at Tsomo village in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.
