The Zambian vice president said weather systems have shown a high likelihood of floods because of increased rainfall patterns. Speaking during a vice president s question and answer session in parliament, she said the floods will have devastating effects on communities, a situation that will result in the provision of relief foods as rains will affect crop harvests. The government, she said, has since started taking necessary measures to address the projected hunger situation in areas that will be affected.

Vice President Inonge Wina has directed the Ministry of Agriculture to quickly assess and rehabilitate all old dams across the country to prevent disasters like in Mumbwa District in Central Province. Mrs. Wina was speaking in Mumbwa when she visited the area where over 270 people, livestock and agricultural fields were affected by floods after the Kandesha Dam burst. Mrs Wina said it is worrying that the dam which was constructed in the 1950s has not been receiving adequate maintenance. She said Government is concerned about the situation because a lot of money is being spent on responding to disasters that could be prevented if measures are taken.

Vice President Inonge Wina has called on Zambians to encourage tolerate divergent views in order to make the country a better for all. Mrs. Wina noted that as the country heads towards the 2021 general elections, most people are misled into hatred and propelling acts of violence against each other. Mrs Wina condemned the vice, thus urging people to love the country by defending its interest and work for the unity of the nation regardless of one’s race, tribe, religion or political affiliation. The Vice President reminded Zambians the importance of upholding the national values and principles as enshrined in the constitution of Zambia.
