AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Triggered by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), it weakens the immune system and can be deadly. According to the WHO, more than 40 million people have died since the HIV virus was discovered on May 20, 1983. More than 38 million people live with HIV/AIDS today. World AIDS Day is December 1.
