RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The demand for industrial goods in the Brazilian economy dropped 1.2% in March, compared to February, according to an indicator released today, May 6th, by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA). The IPEA Indicator of Apparent Consumption of Industrial Goods is updated monthly and measures the consumption of manufactured goods in Brazil, be they produced by local industry or imported. Elderly Covid-19 deaths affect poor families in Brazil Elderly Covid-19 deaths affect poor families in Brazil Brasilia, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) The death of elderlies by Covid-19 presently affects income of nearly half of households in Brazil, mainly the poorest, as disclosed by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). Published by the Latin America´s largest scientific research center, Behavior Research (ConVid) was conducted in cooperation with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (southeast) and the State University of Campinas (Sao Paulo). The study proved that Brazilian households´ income dropped 47.1% from April to May 2020, and a 23.6% stiff earning step-down. Among those people who are currently working with no formal contract, the households´ decreased income reached 79.8% and the absence of capital in 55.3%.

The Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) recently announced a list of research projects selected in a call for proposals to receive R$50 million in funding for COVID-19 research. Of this amount, R$30 million will be drawn from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) for research into treatments, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and the pathogenesis or biological mechanism of the disease. The other R$20 million will be contributed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health for use in projects around prevention, containment and healthcare ( see article). The overwhelming response to the call for projects shows that the scientific community in Brazil is eager to advance research about the disease, more than the government can afford. A total of 2,219 project proposals were submitted. If all were approved, these projects would involve R$1.7 billion in funding, 34 times more than available. An evaluation committee recommended a
