Terming it as a "golden day" for the people of Assam, Home Minister Amit Shah said ULFA has agreed to abjure violence and disband the organisation.

The hardline faction of ULFA, led by Paresh Baruah, will not be part of the agreement. Baruah has been opposing the peace talks which was started by Rajkhowa-led ULFA faction in 2011. The ULFA was formed in 1979 with the demand for a "sovereign Assam".
