Job opportunity: How to become a mason
Alan Morrell
About the job
Masons work with stone to create buildings, structures and more. Examples of what they build include stone walls, floors, interiors and exteriors, as well as things like piers.
“We build new construction, and there’s a big market in restoring buildings from the past,” said Jason Requa, secretary-treasurer of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 3, the local union. “We use everything from power tools to robotics to hand tools…We’re considered a trowel trade.”
The types of stone used include brick, concrete, marble, and terrazzo. Requa noted that the masonry trade is not affiliated with freemasonry, which he called “more of a political thing.” The local union represents roughly 1,500 masons in 24 counties.
