Washington lawmakers have committed $1 billion toward a new bridge over the Columbia River and the federal government is poised to provide substantial funding, the leaders of Metro, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, TriMet and Port of Portland write. What's missing, however is a $1 billion investment from Oregon lawmakers so that the state can finally address our need for a new bridge.

State Sen. Mark Meek has urged lawmakers to consider bills to ban or defer tolls on key highways.

Proposed legislation to fund Oregon's share of the Interstate Bridge project has drawn criticism for including language about the separate Rose Quarter project.

Both propose $1 billion from bonds, but one would add studies for Rose Quarter and future highway funding; the other would require federal grants first.

Oregon is being asked to kick in $1 billion for the $6 billion megaproject, and lawmakers are taking a fresh look at the cost of each piece of the work.
