U S Air Force Conducts Advanced Connectivity Trials

(Photo: U.S. Air Force) On December 9 the U.S. Air Force undertook inflight connectivity trials with the Lockheed Martin F-22A and F-35A fighters, each of which carried a GatewayOne payload. Thanks to this equipment, the two aircraft passed critical mission data between themselves and ground nodes. Conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Air Force Lifecycle Management Center (AFLMC), with the 46th Test Squadron from Eglin AFB, the trials took place over the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. They involved an F-22 from the Edwards AFB-based 411th Flight Test Squadron and an F-35A from the Nellis AFB-based 59th Test and Evaluation Squadron.

“Testing is all about pushing the limits of what’s possible, finding out where the toughest challenges are, and adapting creative solutions to overcoming difficult problem sets,” Stowe said. “The real win of the day was seeing the gatewayONE establish a secure two-way translational data path across multiple platforms and multiple domains. That’s the stuff ABMS is all about.” Fifth-generation fighters are typically limited to communicating with each other and to command and control centers via legacy tactical data connections, not in their native, but incompatible digital “languages” – Multifunctional Advanced Data Link for F-35 and Intra-Flight Data Link for the F-22. Not only can gatewayONE translate between those formats, in this test it moved data that is normally relegated to an operations center or tactical ground node, directly pushing it into the cockpit at the edge of the multi-domain battlespace for the first time.

By Garrett Reim2020-12-15T01:29:00+00:00 The US Air Force’s (USAF’s) Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35A Lightning II and the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Kratos Defense XQ-58A Valkyrie flew in formation for the first time on 9 December at the US Army Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. The formation flight was part of an attempted demonstration of data transmission between all three aircraft. The F-22 and F-35A successfully shared data using a novel technology called “gatewayONE”, but the XQ-58A was unable to link up, the USAF said on 14 December.
