A spacecraft built and flown by Texas-based company Intuitive Machines landed near the south pole of the moon on Thursday, the first U.S. touchdown on the lunar surface in more than half a century and the first ever achieved entirely by the private sector.

It's the first US landing on the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

NASA’s growing public-private partnership program hopes to make two lunar deliveries each year and there are several other launches scheduled for 2024.

The Odysseus lander from the Houston company Intuitive Machines touched down near the moon's south pole at 5:23 p.m. Central Time, making it the first commercial landing on the lunar surface and the first American spacecraft to make a soft landing there since the Apollo program ended in the 1970s.
