weaknesses. democrats increasingly have a problem with blue collar voters. the president saying he s middle class joe, he mass has a blueprint for you. good jobs, starting in high school, provide access to two years in community college. the best career training in addition to being a pathway to a four-year degree. for every american, a path to a degree. whether they go to college or not. and i was joking last night, i m not sure it s a joke, whoever wrote the speech spent some time watching another focus on the border and fentanyl crisis. the president saying watch me, i m going to get ahead of you. we now have a record number of personnel working to secure the border. arresting 8,000 human smugglers. seizing over 23,000 pounds of fentanyl in the last several months.
george floyd. george floyd s family was there a year ago. tyre nichols family now. it s harder to do it now. it s unfortunate, i just don t see real prospect for something like this happening. there s a big difference between republicans and democrats how police should be held accountable that were insurmountable the last time. i think you ll see both parties really position themselves around this but a real compromise. you mentioned position. again, this speech was crafted smartly politically, whether you agree or disagree with the president at home, thinking about re-election. and defunding the police, joe biden has never wanted to defund the police but he made that clear last night. i know most cops and their families are good people, the vast majority. and they risk their lives
the speech. the question is how it landed in america. are americans still listening to this president? that s very much an open question. we re here north of madison. this is a deep blue battleground in wisconsin. that is where the president decided to come after his first stop after the state of the union. not by coincidence, he wants to show democrats he still has vigor in his step. he wants to show democrats he is the man for the job. john, talking to supporters of his, and the critics, talking to them over the last couple days you get the sense there s a deeper respect for this president but there s very much an open question the desire to have a second term. talking to democrats some who watched the speech, some who didn t said they believe there should be more inside the party for 2024, they believe it should not be a fait accompli and he should run for re-election. the president is selling the message. and this is part of the burden
