DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge Friday extended an order that will prevent state officials from enforcing a law that prohibits school districts from implementing mask requirements until a federal lawsuit challenging the law can be heard.

A group of Iowa environmental organizations argue the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) didn’t do its job in determining if MidAmerican Energy Company met all the requirements for its emissions plan and budget—and properly weighing the appropriate factors. IUB and MidAmerican say they are asking for more than what the law requires.

Republicans in the Iowa Senate voted Tuesday to reject the first set of proposed legislative and congressional districts.

Vote on party line sends Iowa redistricting plan back to square one

Iowa lawmakers returned Tuesday to the Capitol for a special session to vote on maps that redraw congressional and legislative districts.

The first set of proposed new political maps was rejected Tuesday during a key moment in Iowa’s decennial redistricting process.

The University of Northern Iowa removed a professor from in-person teaching because he required masks in his close-quarters lab. He says he's not budging, and he's asking for other professors to join him.

Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague announced in a news release Wednesday that he has “indefinitely extended” the mask order he established Aug. 19 “due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

The petition to remove Brian Carper garnered 559 signatures and was e-mailed to school board members at the beginning of September.
