Ipid Amendment Bill News Today

Parties debated the bill on Tuesday, with the opposition maintaining that the police minister still exercises too much power over the IPID, calling for greater independence.

The power currently rests with the minister of police, which has brought into question the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)s independence.

The public hearings into the bill, that will still give the minister of police powers over the appointment of the Ipid head, will be held virtually starting on Wednesday morning.

The purpose of the Ipid Amendment Bill is to increase the institutional and practical independence of the police watchdogs investigation of crimes committed by police officers.

The new bill deals with the independence of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) as well as the appointment of its executive director.
