Concerned community members in Qonce plan to petition education MEC Fundile Gade in a bid to compel him to rebuild the dilapidated iQonce High School. The online petition platform, change.org, was started by Ginsberg resident and community activist Nhlanhla Mosele in September. About 2,808 signatures have been gathered.
As we celebrate Youth Month and commemorate Youth Day, we need to reflect on the issues that affect our youth with the view of assessing progress made and challenges that we still face. This calls on all of us to make sure that the freedom that the youth selflessly fought and died for, translates to economic benefits and opportunities.
To some, school premises represent optimism and a brighter future, but to iQonce High School pupils they represent the desire to earn grade 12 so they can leave the dreary walls and pit toilets to which they have been subjected for years. Concerned parents are pleading with the education department to intervene in their children’s plight.
