Debutants Istiklol made history by sealing maiden progression
The 2021 AFC Champions League group campaign in the West Zone was completed on Friday with eight teams progressing to the Round of 16. Teams from the East Zone will kick off their campaign in June, competing for the remaining eight qualifying slots.
Three of the four Iranian sides involved progressed, with last year s runners-up Persepolis, Esteghlal and Tractor advancing, leaving Foolad as the only eliminated Iran Pro League team. Joining the trio in the knockout phase will be Riyadh-based duo Al Hilal and Al Nassr while Al Wahda and Sharjah of the United Arab Emirates both made it through. Tournament debutants Istiklol, meanwhile, took their group campaign by storm and progressed as group winners.

Margao: FC Goa coach Juan Ferrando has told his players they would have to work “three times as hard” as Persepolis FC if they have to get anything out of their AFC Champions League group encounter at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Tuesday.
Goa have enjoyed a phenomenal debut in Asian football’s top-tier club competition with draws against Al Rayyan (Qatar) and Al Wahda. In the last game against the UAE side, Ferrando’s team even had chances to steal all three points but lacked the final touch.

Riyadh: Al Sadd will be looking to collect full points against a strong Al Nassr side when the familiar opponents meet on the second matchday in Group D of the 2021 AFC Champions League today.
The Qatari football giants will be targeting their first win in the Group stage today after being denied full points on Wednesday following a one-all draw against Iran’s Foolad Khouzestan where Boualem Khoukhi’s last gasp goal saved their blushes. Al Nassr were also denied an opening day win by tournament debutantes Al Wehdat on Wednesday, with the hosts frustrated despite controlling 67 percent of possession.
