NU condemns Joseph Epstein s WSJ op-ed

Northwestern condemned the opinions expressed by former English lecturer Joseph Epstein in a viral Wall Street Journal piece on Jill Biden’s ‘doctor’ title. In the op-ed, Epstein called the future FLOTUS “Madame First Lady Mrs. Biden Jill kiddo.” His arguments, like implying that her honorific title feels “fraudulent” and “comic” have received backlash for being patronizing and sexist. Epstein pointed to recent honorary-degree recipients and commencement speakers at NU including Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers saying he complained to University President Morton Schapiro about their “low quality” as academic honorands. He went on to describe a degree from NU as a “credential” rather than a university education, arguing that political correctness has diminished the value of honorary doctorates.

NU students ask for transparency from trustees

Students asked for transparency from Northwestern’s Board of Trustees at the Advisory Committee on Investment Responsibility meeting Thursday. ACIR and attendees discussed the University’s search for a new vice president and chief investment officer, a job that manages the University’s endowment, which is currently valued at about $10 billion. Associated Student Government passed a resolution in October calling for students to be added to the CIO search committee, currently composed of trustees, faculty and University administrators. Psychology Prof. and ACIR chair David Uttal said he plans to email Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Craig Johnson about potentially adding student representatives to the CIO search committee. He said he thinks there’s still time in the University’s search to add student input, especially once the committee reaches the candidate stage.
