Theodore "Ted" Kaczynski, the Harvard-educated mathematician who retreated to a dingy shack in the Montana wilderness and ran a 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people, has died at the age of 81.

He was found unresponsive in his cell early this morning and was pronounced dead around 8 a.m.

Kaczynski, 81, killed three people and injured 23 more during a mass mail-bombing spree between 1978 and 1995. He later pleaded guilty to his crimes.

He was serving life without the possibility of parole following his 1996 arrest for a series of bombings that targeted scientists.

Kaczynski, 81, was handed four life sentences plus 30 years for his one-man campaign of terror.
