mart's piece again. we're having fun with this, but it's also very important to understand its. she's an independent. now. she has not declared whether she's going to run for re election. but that's hard. that's hard to run in the state. and you know, as you're running as a third party candidate, essentially one of her colleagues quoted in the piece by jonathan martin, one of her democratic colleagues that confirmed moderate told me in private earlier this year about cinema. she's the biggest ego maniac in the senate. there are a lot of big egos in politics, but so some people understand this is the brand. some people don't like it. absolutely i mean, we're saying this. this may sting here. i mean, there. it's not the first time we've seen a member of a party criticized. you know the white house even if there's a democrat in that white house, but i mean, this goes beyond that, and that piece jane march reporting as well that she's criticizing ron clean as well during a judicial appointment. even putting up, you know, giving the finger at that at one point in front of a crowd, you know, criticizing various aspects of the

house democrat upset about the filibuster, she would like to move more. she can only do so much and she's tired of holding off one side to keep everybody on the same, pulling in the same direction. >> helene cooper, the kamala harris, biden stuff, there's a part of it that i read and like, i could have transposed the words obama and biden and biden as harris and obama aides used to look down upon, some of this feels normal. >> every vice president, i mean we're talking about this earlier. every vice president feels as if they're given only the hard stuff. they don't have enough to do. they're not put forward enough by the principal. the kamala harris stuff, i mean, listening just now to your interview with j mart and with alex struck me as also, the idea of her coming out and saying, people should stand up, being upset people are not standing up when she enters the room. that sounds like, in a sad way,

crazier members of the republican house caucus. that's saying quite a lot. so the question is does all of this add up to donald trump and some of the craziest members of the house gop caucus supporting somebody else after republicans take -- retake control of the house? >> i don't think so yet, joe. part of it is you have to beat somebody with somebody, and if mccarthy is able to lead how republicans to victory, if they pick up, you know, 20 or 30 or some big number of seats, i think he will probably get the credit from his caucus for the win. when i read this story, i see the different ways that these two leaders feel like they still need or don't need donald trump. look, if i see j. mart hanging around mitch mcconnell's office, i know i'm about to be scooped. in this case he goes further than we've been able to go with how frustrated and angry mcconnell was with trump.

sort of behind trump no matter what mentality is the pervading view in the republican party right now. j. mart, you have some reporting out today about how people like mitch mcconnell are leading this effort to put up some kind of opposition to this blind following of the former president. >> yeah, i have a story today that is right there on the screen at the "times" about this effort loosely led by mcconnell but with other people including actually george w. bush who has sort of been deputized coming out of retirement to try to recruit a handful of senate candidates like doug doozy in arizona and in new hampshire the governor sanu who took a pass already. there is a feeling in the pre-trump gop that this battle against trumpism is not just going to be fought in '24 but it also has to be fought in the midterms. if the kind of people winning

>> in a midterm election year where republicans, knowing the wind is at their back, settle our family feuds quietly. but this is what j. mart writes. in conversations with would-be senators, mitch mcconnell is blunt about the knowledge he believes trump has done. he has said he won't unelectable goofballs win republican primaries. this is one of the reasons he wants governor deucy to run in arizona. in '22, it could be what missouri was in 2014 where you get a candidate in a 50/50 state. missouri is no longer 50/50. starting to trend away. but a candidate in a state where there are enough democrats if the independents break. that's mcconnell's worry as he pursues power. deucy is one of the guys trump has gone after hard. do you want to -- do you personally want to deal with that? >> to some degree, perhaps i think republicans might want to see that actually play out. they want to test that case. they want to see because, and j. mart hits at this in a very smart manner of that will

of those two candidates comes out of iowa with any delegates. i think the other factor to think about here, john and alisyn, is that we're looking at this from the standpoint of iowans not having caucused yet. as you all know, the minute we get through that first state, all the national numbers begin to scramble. somebody wins. there's excitement and momentum around that candidate and all the numbers we're seeing begin to change. we don't know what that sworwors going to look like. it's hard to draw conclugss clu about who is going to be viable. >> josh, j. mart, great to see you both. we've got the good stuff, next. first, here's a preview of the new cnn films. >> i was 18 years old. we formed a little band and called ourselves the stone ponies. ♪ >> the l.a. scene was in gear
