This follows a recent incident in which an unidentified visitor gained access into the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital's restricted area.

At 8am on Monday morning the ICU at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital had to be evacuated after the oxygen to the unit was cut.

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has criticised the provincial health department for not blacklisting companies implicated in corruption tenders at Tembisa Hospital.

Although the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, Gauteng, had been declared "unfit for human habitation" and "an occupational hazard" in 2017, patients and healthcare workers are continuing to receive and provide health services under unusually difficult conditions. Some say they fear for their lives.

Thabo Molelekwa visited Tambo Memorial Hospital and spoke to some healthcare workers and patients about conditions there.

The provincial department of health also revealed 56 babies were abandoned at Gauteng Hospitals between January and August 2022.

According to former Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi, all the hospitals identified the poor socio-economic background of mothers as a major reason for babies being abandoned in their wards.


The figure was confirmed by the department in a written reply to questions in the provincial legislature on Monday.
