Ray Wemple was the kind of guy who always commanded respect, but for much more than just his physical presence.
The former Schenectady police sergeant, who was indeed a big man – he was 6-foot-4 and at one time tipped the scales at over 400 pounds – was much more respected not for his size but for the way he spent his 34 years in blue, either as a patrolman, community organizer or in a number of other positions.

SCHENECTADY The Chamber of Schenectady County is accepting nominations for the 2021 Good News Awards.
The annual awards recognize several types of achievement: exceptional growth or expansion in the prior 18 months; a new or renovated building; a significant anniversary; extraordinary community support; launch of a unique product or service in the past year; or being a success story during the COVID pandemic.
The 2020 recipients were: Clarkson University’s Education Department; Clinton Street Mercantile; Jack’s Place, Jack Falvo III Foundation of Schenectady; JDog Junk Removal & Hauling LLC; Patrick’s Union Street Barbershop; and Turf Tavern.

SCHENECTADY The Schenectady police officer involved in a controversial arrest last year that led to discipline had a separate disciplinary proceeding and also a counseling memo issued to him within the seven months before that.
Newly released Schenectady Police Department internal records show that Officer Brian Pommer, an eight-year veteran of the force, was given a counseling memo for discourtesy and using profanity following his response to a domestic call on Nov. 11, 2019.
