The one-time deli owner from Bakersfield ascended through state and national politics to become second in line to the presidency before hard-right conservatives engineered his removal in October.

It took a record 15 votes over four days early this year for McCarthy to line up the support he needed to win the post he had long coveted, to only be ousted in October.

Two months after his historic ouster as House speaker, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from his congressional seat and will leave by the end of the year.

McCarthy is the only speaker in history to be voted out of the job.

McCarthy arrived in the House in January 2007 after a stint in the California Assembly, where he served as minority leader
