The ongoing project to widen Hwy 46 east to four lanes will slow traffic through the Cholame area on Tuesday and Wednesday, Caltrans officials say.

Walking through the doors of the Jack Ranch Cafe is like stepping into the past. A restaurant reminiscent of a simpler time.

Work is moving forward on a section of Hwy 46 East in north San Luis Obispo County.

– Construction has begun on widening Hwy. 46 East from the Shandon Roadside Rest Area to west of the Jack Ranch Café in Cholame. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for this project that will convert a two-lane divided highway into a four-lane expressway.

– It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the passing of Jeff Stemper, a long-time resident of Parkfield, born and raised in Paso Robles, California. On Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, Jeff closed his eyes one last time and went peacefully while he slept.

The construction project will begin in the spring of 2022 and is expected to be complete in 2024.

– An major vehicle pileup on Highway 46 occurred Monday shortly after noon near what's known as the Cholame "Y." One person died in the collision and three people were injured.

Before 3 p.m. on Monday, officials said Hwy 46 reopened after traffic was stopped for several hours following a multi-vehicle crash in the area.
