Panthers Punch Ticket: High Point Beats Richmond For First SoCon Title Since 2015

High Point punched 2021’s first ticket to the men’s DI NCAA Tournament. The Panthers beat top-seeded Richmond, 11-7, to win the SoCon Tournament Championship and earn the league’s AQ. It is High Point’s first SoCon championship since 2015. Kevin Rogers, the transfer from Lynchburg and IL’s 2020 DIII Player of the Year, had four goals and an assist, pacing the Panthers. Davis Sampere won 17-of-21 face-offs. High Point opened up big, scoring the first four goals and going up as much as 7-1 early. But like the SoCon Semifinal matchup against Jacksonville, their opponent wasn’t going away easily.

SoCon Semis: Richmond Makes It Seven-Straight Finals; High Point Holds On

Conference championship games are just what Richmond does. For the seventh-straight year, the Spiders are in their conference championship game all six years of the SoCon’s existence and one year as the Atlantic Sun. Top-seeded Richmond handled No. 4 seed Air Force, 11-6, inside Robins Stadium on Wednesday. They’ll host Friday against High Point for a shot at three-straight championships and NCAA berths. So for a Spider team coming off a 9-8 loss to the Falcons four days ago, it felt pretty much in the bag in terms of who’d advance. It was led by defense, with Richmond forcing 13 turnovers, led by Sean Menges’ three to go along with four groundballs. When Air Force did have a chance, Jack Rusbuldt gobbled it up 12 times.
