Published July 04. 2021 12:01AM  By The country again celebrates the Declaration of Independence that put in motion events, both violent and inspired, that turned a British colony into a nation that undertook a great experiment in self-rule. But the observance is tempered by the sobering events of the past year. They have reminded us this experiment is not complete. It never will be. It is dependent on the good will of the people and their elected leaders to preserve and improve it. Ironic, then, that a Republican president the first Republican president warned this nation before he ever took office that if this republic were to be undone, it would not be the work of foreign invaders but come from within. It would be the actions of those willing to sacrifice democracy for power.
