If we are to attack covid19 head on, we need to transform private healthcare from within. We can save the lives of the one in two people who are dying now from totally preventable chronic diseases, and are among the first to be cut down by covid19. If we dramatically shift the focus towards primary care, enlist insurers, and adopt digital tools on a mass scale, we can not only save those lives, we can turn the $4 billion private healthcare industry in TT into an engine of economic growth.
T&T Medical Association supports covid19 vaccine programme

The Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association (T&TMA) says it is ready and willing to work with the government in the upcoming covid19 vaccination distribution process, scheduled to begin in March, as well as any sensitisation sessions.
Dr Vishi Y Beharry, the new president of the T&TMA made the statement after he was installed on Saturday evening at the association’s virtual presidential inauguration and conferring of honours ceremony.
Earlier, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh called on the association to support the country’s vaccination drive. He did so after announcing that around 4pm on Saturday, the Pan American health Organization (PAHO) informed him, “all things being equal,” TT should receive 100,000 to 120,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca covid19 vaccine by the end of February or the beginning of March through the COVAX Facility.

One in three patients missed their doctor’s visit last year. This is setting us up for our next health crisis, and nobody is talking about it.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (disclaimer: I have consulted for the EIU), reckons that doctor’s visits in TT were down by 80 per cent during the three months of lockdown in 2020, and down by 20 per cent for the rest of 2020 and up to now. Until a vaccine arrives, a recovery of the market is unlikely anytime soon.
