James H. Doolittle, in full James Harold Doolittle, byname Jimmy Doolittle, (born Dec. 14, 1896, Alameda, Calif., U.S. died Sept. 27, 1993, Pebble Beach, Calif.), American aviator and army general who led an air raid on Tokyo and other Japanese cities four months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Doolittle was educated at Los Angeles Junior College (1914–16) and the University of California School of Mines (1916–17). As an army enlistee during World War I, he became an expert aviator and flight instructor. He stayed in the Army Air Corps after the war, was promoted to first lieutenant in 1920,
