GLASGOW is getting ready to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference this autumn and the city has a long history of staging major international events. The first of these was the 1888 International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art. This had two main aims: to showcase the city’s achievements and to raise enough money to build an art gallery, museum and school of art. Civic pride was a major motivating factor. Manchester held a similar event in 1887 and Edinburgh the year before that, so Glasgow was determined to uphold its reputation as the Second City of the Empire and put on a grand spectacle.
