Local brewing company hosts 'Sips for Sealife' benefiting Texas Sealife Center

Local brewing company hosts 'Sips for Sealife' benefiting Texas Sealife Center Alexis Montalbo and last updated 2021-04-17 22:03:44-04 After more than a year, Lorelei Brewing Company invited people out to the 4th annual Sips for Sealife benefiting the Texas Sealife Center. Local vendors, artists, and of course the local brewery were in attendance for one of the biggest fundraisers for the center. "For us, it's a no brainer to want to lend support where we can, and if we can have an event like this and raise money," said Eric Jolly with the Lorelei Beer Experience. "It's really important to support local, local businesses, local non-profits. That to me is one of the most beautiful things about this event," said Jamie McWilliams, a volunteer at Texas Sealife.

According to volunteers, recovery efforts continue at the Texas Sealife Center where volunteers say they are gearing up to release more turtles back to their natural habitat. Since the freeze, volunteers have cleared and released about 300 sea turtles. However, there were a few more who were not ready just yet.

Turtles rescued during Texas' deep freeze are released back to the wild down SLIDES

The record cold and snow in Texas didn't just catch the state's human inhabitants off-guard, it threatened its endangered sea turtle population. Volunteers rescued thousands of the endangered amphibians across the Gulf region last week that were effectively paralyzed by the freezing temperatures,  preventing them from eating or keeping their heads above water. Wildlife officials in Corpus Christi recently returned hundreds of sea turtles to the ocean and used slides to return them to the wild. The gentle creatures were placed one at a time on a wet slide, zoomed back into the water and then swam away. The Texas Sealife Center says it released more than 200 sea turtles on Monday and Tuesday alone.
