Our brain likes habits and tends to work by difference rather than absolutes, so it gathers a lot of independent clues to generate expectations - for then being thrown off if they are not met.
I m sure you ve felt strange if you tried to walk on an escalator that s not moving, even if when not moving it s simply a flight of stairs, and you wouldn t feel strange on stairs. That s because the visual, tactile and environmental clues are so that your brain generates the expectation to having to compensate for movement etc, kinetic variation on your body etc. And gets very surprised when nothing of the sort happens. So you feel a little queasy and disoriented.
