Shelf Life: York Public Library to return to (almost) business as usual

Shelf Life: York Public Library to return to (almost) business as usual Jane Siviski YORK - Our gradual reopening here at York Public Library has become much less gradual following Governor Mills’ announcement which lifts many COVID-19 restrictions. We weren’t sure this day would ever come excuse us as we rub our eyes in disbelief and relief. We thought we’d take a minute to clarify what’s changing and what isn’t here at the library. Masks are still required. As a public space that serves many children, we are still considering the best practice for mask requirements going forward. Until you hear otherwise, we will require masks inside the building to support children and families who are still at risk. We will continue to evaluate the need for masks.

Shelf Life: 2 great reads for April

Shelf Life: 2 great reads for April By Jane Siviski Life is maybe… possibly… probably moving in the direction of “normal.” More and more of us are getting our vaccinations, and every day it seems like we are celebrating another loved one getting a COVID vaccination. Or maybe you have! We are potentially on track to have small gatherings come July 4th. (It will be the best blueberry pie any of us has ever had.) Being halfway through March, it’s still a bit premature to, say, meet up with your book club over coffee. But if you’re looking for a great read, and hankering for thoughtful discussion and meaningful interaction (albeit virtually), York Public Library has the fix, thanks to support from the Maine Humanities Council.

Last session in Forum on Race and Equity takes place Feb. 25 at York Public Library

Tomorrow, Feb. 25, is the conclusion of York Public Library’s four-part Forum on Race and Equity with Maine-based Racial Equity and Reconciliation Advocate Dustin Ward. The forum has been informative, powerful, enlightening, and humbling. In the first three forum sessions, Ward shared his personal experiences of racism as a Person of Color growing up in Maine, a state in which the population is 95% white (Fact: We are tied with Vermont as being “the Whitest” State).  In his talks, Ward has discussed the reality of Black life in America and racist structures that pervade society (in education, healthcare, housing, the economy, and the justice system, to name a few). He’s asked attendees thought-provoking questions and offered warm encouragement all the way as we continue or more likely, begin our antiracist journeys.
