The Fort Myers City Council selected Major Jason Fields as the new Fort Myers Police Chief, following the late Chief Diggs.

Jason Fields, a major with the Fort Myers Police Department, earned the top spot Monday after council members approved city managers choice.

The Fort Myers Police Department is still without a permanent chief, but there may be an update on the next candidate at a council meeting.

The Fort Myers city manager made his suggestion for the next police chief to take the place of the late Chief Derrick Diggs who passed in February.

The four finalists for Fort Myers police chief answer: "What factors do you consider when making important law enforcement or organization decisions?"

After 170 applicants applied, the candidates for Fort Myers police chief were narrowed down to four: Reo Hatfield, deputy police chief for the Virginia Beach Police Department; Victor Medico, a Fort Myers Police Department captain; Gina Hawkins, retired Fayetteville police chief; and Jason Fields, acting major for FMPD.

Four finalists have been chosen after more than 170 candidates applied to be the next police chief at the Fort Myers Police Department.

The City of Fort Myers has three finalists for its Chief of Police position. The announcement comes three months after former Chief Derrick Diggs passed away.

Two candidates vying to become the Fort Myers Police chief have removed themselves from consideration. The search continues.
