Washington has some new Commanders in town.

The new name was unveiled 18 months after the once-storied franchise dropped its old moniker following decades of criticism that it was offensive to Native Americans and under fresh pressure from sponsors.

The new name was unveiled 18 months after the once-storied franchise dropped its old moniker following decades of criticism that it was offensive to Native Americans and under fresh pressure from sponsors.

After a two-year search, the team announced a new name and mascot to replace the generic moniker it adopted to replace the longtime name, which was considered a racial slur of Native Americans.

The franchise joins other professional sports teams who have abandoned names linked to Native Americans.

Nicknames are commonplace in sports. Just look at the District. The Wizards are the Wiz. The Capitals are the Caps. The Nationals are the Nats. The Redskins were the Skins. The Washington Football Team was the WFT. How the heck do you shorten Commanders?
