Ocean Diner reopens for outdoor dining

Ocean Diner in Hermosa Beach has reopened after being shuttered for three months, though the outdoor dining allowed under coronavirus health rules won’t be a boon to the restaurant, its owner said. Rick Hankus reopened the popular, longstanding diner he has owned for 34 years on Friday, Feb. 26. Hankus is happy, he said, to be serving his loyal customers and to bring back his longtime employees. But with only eight outside tables and some to-go business, he is only able to break even. “Hopefully, this will pick up,” Hankus said. “Then, slowly, I will be able to breathe better. I haven’t been breathing very well lately.”

Restaurant owners throughout the South Bay greeted Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to lift the state’s regional stay-at-home order Monday, Jan. 25, with guarded optimism. Over the summer, many restaurants throughout the region scrambled to craft patios so they could welcome customers outdoors as a way to survive during the coronavirus pandemic, which shuttered indoor dining. But then, ahead of the winter holidays, the state’s regional stay-at-home order — and a separate county order that a judge threw out — banned all in-person dining to help slow the surging pandemic. But without the regional order, the state has now returned to the color-coded tier system. And even though Los Angeles County remains in the most restrictive tier, outdoor dining can resume, as can other industries, with modifications, such as personal care services — which include hair and nail salons — and outdoor operations at museums and aquariums.
