Colleges are going over race-conscious practices with a fine-toothed comb, anticipating future legal challenges. Critics fear they’re sacrificing values at the altar of prudence. The dust was still settling from the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action when, less than a week later, around 300 students of color at Western Illinois University got an unexpected email from the university: a $1,000 scholarship they’d been promised just months early would no longer be available.

What the affirmative action decision means beyond admissions

The Supreme Court’s decision only explicitly addressed admissions. But legal experts say it could have much broader implications and that colleges would be wise to prepare accordingly. It’s been less than a month since the Supreme Court ruled that affirmative action in admissions was unconstitutional.
