Night Train, we’ll showcase some of the many songs that are now in the public domain too. And since it s the composition, not the recording, whose status has changed,
Night Train will highlight songs waxed from the ‘20s up to the present day from such artists at Fats Waller, Dinah Washington, Roy Haynes, the Mills Brothers and more.
And as the January Best of the Year feature continues, we’ll hear show favorites Erroll Garner, Bill Frisell, Pearl Django and more, salute 2020 ‘Genius Grant’ recipient Cecile McLorin Salvant and Grammy nominee Kenny Washington, and remember Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Kimbrough. Neil Swainson was born and raised in the province of British Columbia, moving to his home base of Toronto in the late ‘70s. Over his career he’s recorded on albums with George Shearing, Jay McShann and Woody Shaw and performed with Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, Mel Torme, James Moody, Lee Konitz and many others. Initially released in 1988, the bassist’s only album as a leader, “49
th Parallel,” has now been made available again. It features a quintet with jazz legends Joe Henderson on tenor and trumpeter Woody Shaw, drummer Jerry Fuller and Gary Williamson on piano.
