OTTAWA - A former RCMP intelligence official is slated to learn his fate today after being convicted of breaching Canada's secrets law.

UPDATE 7:47 a.m. A judge has sentenced former RCMP intelligence official Cameron Jay Ortis to 14 years in prison for breaching Canada's secrets law.

Assistant crown attorney Judy Kliewer said Ortis’s conduct was a betrayal of the RCMP and Canada’s Five Eyes partners that jeopardized the safety of Canadians.

Prosecutors want ex-RCMP intelligence director general Cameron Ortis sentenced to the maximum prison term possible to “send a message” after he was found guilty of leaking top secret information to suspected criminals. 

Michael Kovrig, one or two Canadians detained in China for almost three years, has called on a judge to avoid imposing a lengthy prison sentence on a former RCMP intelligence official found guilty of leaking secrets.
