Mumbai: In the latest development in the extortion case involving former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday called two of his personal assistants for questioning in connection with allegations of corruption levelled against him by ex-Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.
The two PAs - Sanjeev Palande and Kundan - are being interrogated by the central probe agency in connection with the preliminary enquiry registered by the agency on the directives of the Bombay High Court. All of this remains in the domain of allegations, so the CBI is trying to look at it from all angles before arriving at a conclusion in the case,

New Delhi:
An independent probe is warranted in the matter of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh's corruption allegations against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh since both occupied such high positions in the government, the Supreme Court today said. It refused to interfere with a Bombay High Court order directing a CBI investigation into the charges, observing that the two persons involved were working closely until they fall apart.
The comments from a Supreme Court bench of Justices S K Kaul and Hemant Gupta came on an appeal by the Maharashtra government and Mr Deshmukh to stay the High Court order.

Looking at the personas involved and nature of allegations and seriousness of allegations, it requires investigation by an independent agency. It is a matter of public confidence, a bench comprising Justices S K Kaul and Hemant Gupta said. We don't want to interfere with the orders of high court directing preliminary inquiry by CBI, the bench said.
