Enon church, bank testify to once-thriving community

After the completion of the Enon Exchange Bank building in 1917, the community of Enon was only a fraction of its size compared to the brief economic boom experienced in 1901 because of prospective mining operations. However, in the ensuing years, the bank and church remained key features of a community that enjoyed a strong business foundation brought on by the Bagnell Branch of the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

COLE COUNTY HISTORY: German immigrant s son raised family, farmed near Millbrook

John Mart Blank, a first-generation American citizen born Aug. 28, 1857, in Cole County, was raised by parents who had emigrated from Germany. He grew up on their Millbrook area farm with his twin brother, Roe, along with six other siblings.

COLE COUNTY HISTORY: Centennial School near Brazito served rural students from 1876 to early 1950s

Although records do not indicate when Centennial School opened, some area residents speculate its beginnings date back to 1876, at which time it took its name from the country s centennial celebration.

CAPITAL CITY HISTORY: Prohibition sheriff, deputies broke law while enforcing it

The candidate supported by the brief resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in Jefferson City was elected to enforce the Volstead Act. While local involvement with the Klan dissipated in 1924, Louis Withaup and his Four Horsemen made raids for the next four years in Cole County and its neighbors.
